Trends — Search Engines — The October 2005 Google Shift
Google, the most popular search engine by far, depends on two things:
- a complex text-matching algorithm which finds pages relevant to what the searcher has entered in the search box.
- the Google PageRank system, which is basically a “vote” by all the other pages on the Web regarding how important a specific Web page is. A link to a page counts as a vote of support.
The Google Shift
On October 18th, 2005, Google began a major algorithm shift which continued for weeks.
Google’s algorithm update changed search engine results pages more than any update during the past two years. For highly competitive keywords, Google wants to list only the most dynamic, popular, authoritative sites to occupy the top 10 places in the “organic” or “natural” rankings. This is the fundamental purpose of all algorithm shifts. Here’s what the shift seems to mean:
- Some Web sites’ rankings went up as a result of the shift.
- Some Web sites are disappearing from search results, and others are now dropping in the results.
- Google may now be assigning even more importance to sites that offer substantive content. Generally speaking, more information about your product or service or field of endeavor should periodically be added to your site. Information on your existing site should be revised, expanded, and updated from time to time.
- “Anchor text” — the hyperlinked text that directs a user to the linked URL — may have also become even more important.
