Click-through

The act of clicking on a hyperlink which directs the user to another site; click-through usually refers to a click on an ad which takes the user to the advertiser's Web site. Click-through rate (CTR) is based on (1) the number of times an ad is clicked and (2) the number of times the ad is viewed. If one hundred people see an ad and two of them click on it and go to the advertiser's site, the CTR is 2%.


Comment Tag

An HTML tag used to hide comments from browsers. A comment tag is placed between symbols <!-- Hello -->. Most search engines will ignore the comments placed between these symbols.


Concept Search

A search for documents related to a keyword or keyword phrase. Different from a search specifically containing the keyword itself.


Conversion Rate

The percentage of orders generated per click-through. Therefore 75 orders which result from 100 click-throughs equals a conversion rate of 75%.


Cookie

A cookie is a very small piece of tracking software placed in a file on your computer's hard disk; the cookie identifies you as a return visitor to the Web site which originally placed it on your computer. Cookies are sometimes used to remember user-selected preferences for a particular Web site: login information, for example.


Counter

A program or tool that counts the number of visits to a web page.


Cost per Action (CPA)

A type of marketing in which a web site gets paid each time an end user performs a desired action.


Cost per Click (CPC)

A type of marketing where a web site gets paid each time an end user clicks a link to the advertiser’s web site.


Cost per Thousand (CPM)

A type of marketing in which a web site gets paid based on the number of impressions given to an advertiser. Calculated in sets of 1000.


Cross Linking

Linking among web pages within the same web site.

Dead Link

A link to a web page that does not exist.


Domain Name

A registered term used in the address of your Web site and e-mail. For example, www.aicolorado.com and info@aicolorado.com are two uses of the domain name aicolorado.com.


Doorway Domain

A web site that consists of mostly doorway pages. The purpose of a doorway domain is to direct traffic to another site.


Doorway Page

Web page created specifically for obtaining top search engine positions.


Entry Page

The first page an end user views after clicking a link to a web site.


Fuzzy Search

A search that retrieves matches for partially spelled or misspelled words.
